A Thousand Splendid Suns by Kahled Hosseini is set in Afghanistan.  Miriam and Laila have vastly different backgrounds.  Miriam was the illegitimate daughter of a serving woman and her employer.  When she confronts her father’s legitimate family she is married off at the tender age of 15 to a brutal man. Laila is the beloved daughter of a teacher, she is educated and encouraged to believe in herself.  Their lives will intersect as violence tears their country apart.  Hosseini captures vividly the quiet heroism of the women and the devastation of their country.  The Kite Runner, Kahled Hosseini’s first book, is  a powerful look at the suffering caused in Afghanistan by the Taliban. It is a coming of age story of two boys, a tale of betrayal and redemption.  Amir is the son of a wealthy business man, Hassan the son of a servant to Amir’s father.  They are childhood playmates and companions until a brutal attack and a moment’s cowardice severs their relationship.  Years later Amir will have the opportunity to atone, but it could cost  his life.

Spring/Summer '09 Reading Group List

“A Thousand Splendid Suns, from the author of The Kite Runner, is a revealing story of the plight of two Afghan women, brought together by loss and war, both of whom you will come to love.”
— Beth Carpenter, The Country Bookshop, Southern Pines, NC

After more than two years on the bestseller lists, Khaled Hosseini returns with a beautiful, riveting, and haunting novel of enormous contemporary relevance.

A Thousand Splendid Suns is a breathtaking story set against the volatile events of Afghanistan’s last thirty years—from the Soviet invasion to the reign of the Taliban to post-Taliban rebuilding—that puts the violence, fear, hope, and faith of this country in intimate, human terms. It is a tale of two generations of characters brought jarringly together by the tragic sweep of war, where personal lives—the struggle to survive, raise a family, find happiness—are inextricable from the history playing out around them.

Propelled by the same storytelling instinct that made The Kite Runner a beloved classic, A Thousand Splendid Suns is at once a remarkable chronicle of three decades of Afghan history and a deeply moving account of family and friendship. It is a striking, heart-wrenching novel of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love—a stunning accomplishment.
