worry for her husband and son. Grandfather Wei shares Kai Ying’s
concerns. Suyin, a young homeless girl, tries to survive in an
unforgiving world. The story gives a feeling of what it must have been like for

China, 1957. Chairman Mao has declared a new openness in society: "Let a hundred flowers bloom; let a hundred schools of thought contend."
