The Invisible Ones by Stef Penney is set in the gypsy community. Ray knew this case would be trouble, but where else was the father to seek help?  If he wants to find his daughter, Ray is pretty much the only Half Romany PI available.  The father knows he will need a Romany detective if there is to be any hope of finding answers in the tight knit community.   It takes Leon six long years to ask someone to look for his daughter Rose.   But they are travelers and she went off with her husband’s clan after she married, so it doesn’t seem quite so odd considering the culture.  As Ray digs into the community of travelers he uncovers strange goings on in the Janko family.  The story alternates between Ray’s voice and the teenage JJ Janko, giving a fresh lively perspective.

“Penney delves deep into the Ronany world in this story of the search for a Gypsy woman who has disappeared. As the detective who seeks her discovers, each revelation leads to even more questions. His narrative alternates with that of a young boy to provide contrasting and conflicting perspectives that increase the tension and mirror the intricacies of the unique world being portrayed. Penny succeeds in both exposing myths and crafting a compelling mystery in this satisfying read.”
