Combining real events and people from history with an intriguing mystery, the story begins with a devious prison escape. Constance Kopp was one of the first Deputy Sheriffs in the USA, quite an accomplishment in the early 1900’s. As the story opens, Constance has been pulled off of her deputy duties and assigned the job of prison matron for the female prisoners while the Sheriff navigates the political consequences of hiring a woman deputy. Constance speaks several languages, one of their prisoners, von Matthesius, speaks German. He has been taken to the hospital complaining of a variety of issues, the Sheriff needs Constance to act as interpreter. The hospital is in chaos when they arrive, that chaos provides an opportunity for the prisoner to escape while Constance was on duty. At the time, if a prisoner escaped and is not immediately recaptured, the Sheriff could be jailed to serve the prisoner’s term. Constance is horrified by the potential threat to the Sheriff and her role in events. She determines to catch the escapee. Stewart does a great job of providing detail on an independent woman’s life in that era, creating a complicated mystery based on real events that show Constance’s ingenuity and determination, and it is great fun to read.— Deon Stonehouse

“Stewart's follow-up to Girl Waits With Gun is equally fascinating. Based on the life of Constance Kopp, the first female deputy sheriff in New Jersey, this tale takes readers from rural New Jersey to the mean streets of New York City in 1915. With grit, smarts, and utter determination, Constance tracks a convict who escaped her custody. Despite the astounding restrictions on a woman's life in the early 20th century, Constance takes every risk to capture her suspect. Complemented by the historical notes that Stewart provides, Lady Cop is both informative and loads of fun.”

“Stewart deftly combines the rough-and-tumble atmosphere of early twentieth-century New York City with the story of three women who want to live life on their own terms.”
—Library Journal, starred review
In 1915, lady cops were not expected to chase down fugitives on the streets of New York City. But Constance Kopp never did what anyone expected.
Constance and her sisters aren’t living the quiet life anymore. They’ve made headlines fighting back against a ruthless silk factory owner and his gang of thugs. After Sheriff Heath sees Constance in action, he appoints her as one of the nation’s first female deputies. But when a German-speaking con man threatens her position—and puts the honorable sheriff at risk for being thrown in his own jail—Constance will be forced to prove herself again.
Based on the Kopp sisters’ real-life adventures, Girl Waits with Gun introduced the sensational lives of Constance Kopp and her sisters to an army of enthusiastic readers. This second installment, also ripped from the headlines, takes us farther into the riveting story of a woman who defied expectations, forged her own path, and tackled crime along the way.
