Poggio Bracciolini’s discovery of the lost manuscript
of “On the Nature Of Things” by Lucretius, a manuscript that had been lost to the world for a
thousand years, was hugely influential to the Renaissance. This was one of the most important
discoveries of its age with far reaching consequences. Lucretius’ powerful poem
had a profound impact on many of the finest minds of their times including
Galileo, Darwin, Montaigne, and Thomas Jefferson. Stephen Greenblatt is a
professor of humanities at Harvard but he is also an author with a very
accessible, intimate style of writing.
