This book starts with Roosevelt's loss in the election for his third presidency. He was an amazing person. During a speech he was shot and slightly wounded, he went right on talking. After loosing the election he traveled to South America. He went down an uncharted river off the Amazon. There was a lot of disaster along the route. It was a miracle he survived.

This book tells about the plains where the great herds of buffalo roamed. Farmers came killing and chasing away the buffalo. Native Americans tried to stop them, telling the farmers the soil would blow away. The farmers ignored the warning, eliminated the buffalo grass and tilling the ground for crops. The topsoil blew away in huge dust bowls. The farmers suffered terrible hardship trying to save their farms. It was a disaster with much suffering. The book is well written, the story gripping.

This is a very funny book, the biography of Bill Bryson's childhood in the 50's. He was a real shrewdy, he took advantage of the other little kids. He talks about going to his Grandpa's farm, going to the movies, and life in the 50's/
