Pam Houston
Pam Houston is one of my favorite authors. Pam has never seen a river she did not want to jump into, a mountain that did not require climbing over, or a trail she did not need to walk down. Her vitality, love of life, and wit makes reading any of her books a treat. I believe Pam's best book is Sight Hound, inspired by her Irish Wolfhound Dante. While she has written a work of fiction, many of the instances in the book are from her own life. Dr. Evans is modeled on Dr. Walsh of UC Davis; the instances of him sleeping in the kennels with his dog patients are true. Dante is a wise Irish Wolfhound who believes that his task in life is to teach his human to love. Dante says "There are Three Principles to remember if you are to teach a human being anything and they are consistency, consistency, and consistency. They are such fragile creatures to begin with, with poor eyes, poorer hearing and no sense of smell left to speak of, its no wonder they are made of fear." Sight Hound is a moving book about trust, a celebration of the power of love and the bond a woman can have with her dog. Dante was Pam's beloved companion in life. Cowboys Are My Weakness is a rollicking good read! Pam is able to write so clearly it feels like you are strolling down the trail with her. She is a writer with passion and the ability to convey a sense of wonder about the natural world. She is also very funny. Pam Houston had two books on Sunriver Books & Music's best seller list for 2006. Sight Hound is number 7 of Deon's picks for the best 10 books ever written. Take a walk on the wild side with Pam Houston.
