Deon's July 2010 Picks

Summer is a fabulous time to curl up in a shady spot with a good book.  Here are a few I have enjoyed.

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (Hardcover)

By Stieg Larsson
$27.95
ISBN-13: 9780307269997
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Knopf, 5/2010
Other Editions of this Title
If you want your summer reading to sizzle pick up The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larsson, the first in his Millennium Trilogy.  Salander is an amazing character!  She is a damaged, anti social, brilliant, creature who works magic on computers. Mikael Blomkvist , a journalist, teams up with Salander to discover the fate of a missing woman.  The Girl Who Played With Fire  picks up the pace as Salander visits mayhem on her enemies.  Action packed, it keeps you on the edge of your seat, Salander is accused of murder.  Blomkvist is certain she is innocent, he is hot on her trail trying to catch her before the cops or the bad guys. The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest is my favorite of the trilogy.  Blomkvist is determined to clear Salander’s name., Salander has got to trust him with all her secrets.  And the girl doesn’t just have a closet full, she has a whole building!

Marcus of Umbria: What an Italian Dog Taught an American Girl about Love (Hardcover)

By Justine van der Leun
$23.99
ISBN-13: 9781605299600
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Rodale Books, 6/2010
Other Editions of this Title
Justine abandons New York for a village in Umbria and an Italian with dark, soulful eyes.  Prickly, independent, and used to her own company, Justine finds fitting into life in a small Umbrian village and a boisterous Italian family a challenge.  She realizes she may have been too hasty; Emmanuele is not going to be her life’s companion.  As she is realizing her error, fate smiles on Justine.  She meets the Italian with loving dark soulful eyes who will be the devoted companion of her days.  In addition to the aforementioned gorgeous eyes, this Italian has four legs, is frightened of her shadow, runs off chasing horses all over creation and has homicidal tendencies toward the local chickens

Heart of Lies (Paperback)

By M.L. Malcolm
$13.99
ISBN-13: 9780061962189
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Harper Paperbacks, 6/2010
Other Editions of this Title
Leo is an endearing man with a very wobbly moral compass.  WWI cost him dearly. Seizing a chance to improve his situation he gets caught up in the web of Hungarian thugs.  Leo escapes Europe with a cache of diamonds and Martha’s heart.  Shanghai is just the place for a man like Leo to find his niche.  Or so it seems, but Leo’s flexible morals ensnare him in the net of a nefarious gangster as the world moves again to war.  The characters are endearingly flawed, the story compelling, and the view of Shanghai dazzling.

The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet (Hardcover)

By David Mitchell
$26.00
ISBN-13: 9781400065455
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Random House, 6/2010
Other Editions of this Title
Jacob arrives off the shore of Japan to the small island housing the Dutch trading company that will be his home far longer than he anticipates.   His curiosity and gift for language allow him to befriend Orito, a young woman who has earned the trust of the governor and been granted the right to study medicine with the foreign doctor. Their stories draw you back to a time that Shogun’s ruled.  This is a remarkable novel that will surprise and uplift you.  The writing is sublime.
