Shoko escaped Japan’s deprivation after WWII by marrying an American serviceman. She thought she was making the right choice, trying for a better life on those fabled American streets paved with gold. She found a land unwilling to welcome her, neighbors who stayed at arm’s length, and streets without even the hint of god dust. Still she raised two children and was a good wife to her husband. When mortality reaches out to give her a tap, she is determined to reconcile her past. Shoko sends her daughter to confront the brother who disowned her over forty years ago. This is a splendid story of family and hope.
