Europe embraced the slow food movement, protecting small farms and fresh food. America turned to huge agro-industry and plastic food. What has this meant for us? Higher rates of diabetes and obesity are some side effects of letting industry decide what we eat. Cattle that spend their short miserable lives knee deep in poop on a feed lot spawned a new form of e-coli deadly to humans. Could there be other ways to grow the food supply?

In 1857 India went mad. The British had morphed from a trading partner to a ruling force determined to convert the heathens, never mind that the Indian population had a culture thousands of years old and religions of their own. Indian troops were horrified when rumors spread that the grease used to coat the new Enfield rifle cartridge was pig fat. It would defile Hindu and Moslem. British Officers failed to take seriously the Indian troops despair. Convinced the British intended to obliterate their culture and faith they rose in a conflagration of violence that raced across the country. Shah Zafar II lived in his palace with little power. Zafar may have had the blood of Genghis Khan, Tamerlane, and Akbar flowing in his veins, but it had diluted badly. When native troops slaughtered their British officers and ran into Delhi, Zafar was ill equipped to lead a mutiny. He was a poet and a mystic, not a warrior in spite of his ancestors. Blood lust in the name of retribution ran riot through the British troops. This was a dark, violent time in Indian history

Forced to flee Chile, Allende travels to Venezuela then on to California. Along the way she begins to write wonderful stories. Leaving Chile was painful; she left behind her beloved grandfather. But the name Allende was not safe during the reign of Pinochet. PBS aired a special on Chile and Pinochet. Many citizens of Chile turned their faces from the actions of their government, preferring not to notice. It concerned me that we may be doing the same thing and spurred me to read The Dark Side by Jane Mayer, a New York Times top 10 book of 2008. The information Ms. Mayer compiled is disturbing.

The remarkable story of Gertrude Bell and the Middle East. She was one of the first women to graduate from Oxford, an avid mountain climber, and passionate about archeology. Gertrude Bell and Lawrence of Arabia traveled all over the Middle East rallying the Sheiks to the Allies' cause during WWI. They needed the Sheiks to rise up against the Ottoman Turks who were aiding the Germans. Gertrude would jump on a horse and head into the desert to meet with tribes and negotiate for Britain. When the war was over, Gertrude and Lawrence fought to keep their promise of an Arab state. Iraq was created.
