Welcome!
May has so much going on I don’t know where to start! Paul Chasman, a talented musician on the acoustical guitar, will be here on the 10th of May at 5:00 PM doing a benefit show for Newberry Habitat for Humanity based on The Book of Bob, his hilarious satire. Tickets are $10. May 15th at 1:00 PM Dara Horn will spend a half hour, signing The World to Come, this year’s Novel Idea for the Deschutes County Library. On May 17th at 500 PM Caldera Springs is sponsoring an appearance by Tom DeWolf. His book, Inheriting the Trade, discloses his ancestor’s active participation in the slave trade. It is an important book documenting the shame of slavery is felt in the north as well as the south. His cousin, Katrina Brown, has produced a documentary, Traces of the Trade, to be shown on PBS June 24th. The book and film make perfect companions. Following the event at Surniver Books & Music, Caldera Springs will host an intimate evening at the Lake House from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Come hear Tom DeWolf speak then go over to the Lake House for a quiet chat. May 24th at 5:00 PM we plan to have some fun with Jo Dereske author of the Miss Zukas mysteries set in the imaginary northwestern town Bellehaven (think Bellingham). Helma Zukas is a conscientious librarian with a bit of a control issue. She wants things in their proper places. Her best friend Ruth, an artist, is a wild child from the get go. ‘Proper places” is an alien concept in Ruth’s world. They may be opposites, but they are life long pals. In their latest outing, Index to Murder, someone steals Ruth’s paintings and she turns to Helma to help solve the crime. On May 31st Sunriver goes to the dogs. A Dog Day in May kicks off at 11:00 AM with a dog walk benefiting the Humane Society of Central Oregon. Events are featured throughout the day, including a Canine Good Citizen test, demonstrations of agility and obedience by The Mt Bachelor Kennel Club, and a dog Costume Party. Village Bar and Grill will have Yappity Hour from 400 to 6:00. Check EVENTS! for more information. May 2008 has some spectacular new books! Garth Stein’s The Art of Racing in the Rain and Rick Bragg’s The Prince of Frogtown are brilliant. See my May reading list for additional books.

Carole's Surprise
Carole Shipman, one of our favorite people, initiated our Carole’s Surprise program. One of the joys of reading is finding a new little gem of a book or a fabulous new author. Carole enjoys being introduced to books and authors she might not have picked for herself. Now you can purchase Carole’s Surprise every quarter and receive a surprise book once a month. The cost of Carole’s Surprise varies but is usually between $41 and $50 depending on the books. (Read More!)

Skeletons at the Feast Skeletons at the Feast
by Bohjalian, Chris A.
Set during the end of World War II, Skeletons at the Feast tells the story of the Emmerichs, a Prussian family who leave their estate and head west to escape the approaching Russian army. Based on the real diaries of a family friend, Bohjalian has captured the horror and senselessness of war as well as the power of friendship, love, and family.--Laura Lucy, White Birch Books (North Conway, NH)

The Art of Racing in the Rain The Art of Racing in the Rain
by Stein, Garth
Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver.

Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life's ordeals.

On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through: the sacrifices Denny has made to succeed professionally; the unexpected loss of Eve, Denny's wife; the three-year battle over their daughter, Zoe, whose maternal grandparents pulled every string to gain custody. In the end, despite what he sees as his own limitations, Enzo comes through heroically to preserve the Swift family, holding in his heart the dream that Denny will become a racing champion with Zoe at his side. Having learned what it takes to be a compassionate and successful person, the wise canine can barely wait until his next lifetime, when he is sure he will return as a man.

A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, "The Art of Racing in the Rain" is a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life . . . as only a dog could tell it.

EVENTS! Authors & Bookclubs!

We enjoy hosting author events. We also have several active book clubs. Sometimes author's will lead a book club discussion. If the book club is to be author led, it will be noted.

Sight Hound
by Houston, Pam
The long-awaited novel--a very special love story--from the best-selling author of "Cowboys Are My Weakness."
This is the story of a woman, Rae, and her dog, Dante, a wolfhound who teaches "his human" that love is stronger than fear (the dog has always known this). Dante is the catalyst for change in other characters as well, and they step forward with their narratives: Rae's house-tender; her therapist; two veterinarians; and an anxiety-ridden actor, Howard, who turns out to be as stalwart as Dante himself. As the "seer" who hunts by sight rather than smell, Dante has some things to add, as does Rose, another dog who lives at Rae's heels, and Stanley the cat. Among and above these myriad voices, Rae voices her own challenges.
With the wit and dead-on candor we've come to expect from Pam Houston, "Sight Hound" unfolds a story that illuminates the intangible covenant between loved ones. Here, dogs and humans are simply equal creatures, looking to connect and holding on for dear life when they do. Reading group guide included.
