March arrives unsure if winter should continue or spring should begin. We go from snow to warm days and bright sunshine. An interesting month. It is also going to be filled with interesting author events. On Saturday March 6th at 5:00 PM we have a double feature, two authors speaking in one evening. Jennie Shortridge will give a presentation on When She Flew, inspired by real events in Portland Oregon. And Erica Bauermeister will give a presentation on The School of Essential Ingredients, an enjoyable novel set in a cooking school. On Saturday March 13th at 5:00 PM Jeff Mapes will give a presentation on Pedaling Revolution, his informative, fun, inspiring book about the benefits and challenges of pedal power. April 3rd we will celebrate Central Oregon author Diane Hammond’s latest book Seeing Stars, already an Indie pick! You can find more information under Events and in March’s newsletter. Check out the store picks for suggestions on great books. We wish you a splendid March.

Major Pettigrew's Last Stand
by
Simonson, Helen
You are about to travel to Edgecombe St. Mary, a small village in the English countryside filled with rolling hills, thatched cottages, and a cast of characters both hilariously original and as familiar as the members of your own family. Among them is Major Ernest Pettigrew (retired), the unlikely hero of Helen Simonson's wondrous debut. Wry, courtly, opinionated, and completely endearing, Major Pettigrew is one of the most indelible characters in contemporary fiction, and from the very first page of this remarkable novel he will steal your heart. The Major leads a quiet life valuing the proper things that Englishmen have lived by for generations: honor, duty, decorum, and a properly brewed cup of tea. But then his brother's death sparks an unexpected friendship with Mrs. Jasmina Ali, the Pakistani shopkeeper from the village. Drawn together by their shared love of literature and the loss of their respective spouses, the Major and Mrs. Ali soon find their friendship blossoming into something more. But village society insists on embracing him as the quintessential local and her as the permanent foreigner. Can their relationship survive the risks one takes when pursuing happiness in the face of culture and tradition? |

We enjoy hosting author events. We also have several active book clubs. Sometimes author's will lead a book club discussion. If the book club is to be author led, it will be noted. Please send us an e-mail or give us a call if you plan to attend an event. It helps us make sure we have the right number of chairs and refreshements. All events are free and we serve refreshements. Title of Event: Jeff Mapes - Pedaling Revolution
When: Saturday, March 13, 2010 5:00 PM Location: Sunriver Books & Music Phone: 541-593-2525 Description: Saturday March 13th we have the pleasure of hearing Jeff Mapes, author of Pedaling Revolution. Biking is becoming a revolution as cyclists and cars vie for road space. Our dependence on fossil fuels has been a contributing factor to the mess in the Middle East, air pollution and a variety of ills. Health care costs are soaring through the roof, with one of the contributing factors being the sedentary nature of Americans. Mapes, an Oregonian reporter, is trying with his marvelous book to lure you out and onto your bikes. From Amsterdam to New York to San Francisco to Portland Oregon people are getting out of their cars and onto their bikes. Mapes cycles with evident glee in Amsterdam where bikes rule. How much healthier would the air quality become (and subsequently the people) if most of the commuting to and from work in cities involved biking? Mapes compares the cycling culture in Europe to the US, highlights individuals, and gives us glimpses of the high cost of our car oriented culture. He casts a reporter’s eye on environmental factors, political issues, health and safety. This is a well researched book that anyone interested in bikes should find interesting. Here in Sunriver, with our mils of bike trails, we are in favor of commuting by bike. The weather is heading into spring, this is the perfect event to get us all primed to hop on our bikes!
